Question: I have a sick cat. any help would be nice.?
(Posted by: on 2012-02-06 21:37:24)
He has been sick for about a day or two now. He won't really eat, and he won't drink too much. He does go to the bathroom, but it comes in really tiny amounts. He is usually really active and wants to go outside, but he just sleeps now. Also, when I try to pick him up, I can hear him meow like he's in pain. I really don't know what to do, and my parents won't take him to a vet. What should I do (remember, vet is not an option) Yeah my parents are really dumb people. They just don't believe in taking animals to the vet. I even told them that he may die. I guess there's nothing I can do, besides buy him pills. Animal cruelty is the worst :/ |

It is hard to give you very good advice when your parents say vet is not an option, and this is certainly a serious situation, maybe an emergency. I can tell you a tip that has helped SOME cats , but it may not work, and even if it could potentially work, it may be already too late to have time to work in time to save him; he could get worse & even die without vet care. So I want you to first understand how serious it is. It sounds like your cat has cystitis (bladder inflammation) which is very painful. & there's a vicious circle of Pain -- > stress -- >cystitis-- >pain etc. Remember cats are famous for hiding their pain as much as possible, so for him to be showing it, he must really be in misery. Cats cannot take over-the-counter pain meds for humans -- those are toxic. For pain they need medicine from a vet. > > > It also sounds like he may be partly (mostly?) blocked, which could kill not only make him suffer, it could even kill him. It probably would not be so hard to treat if you could get him to a vet right away. But if he's having trouble peeing, and/ or is not eating, he is on the verge of this getting much more dangerous ( and more costly to treat .) So IF by chance your parents are just waiting and thinking that if he doesn't get better on his own in several days they will break down and take him to a vet -- they need to learn that that is NOT a good strategy in this case. Plus it is just plain cruel A BLOCKED CAT = EMERGENCY Cats who are having only tiny amounts of urine coming out are a cause for serious concern (especially males ) Your cat may have a urethral blockage, may be close to a complete blockage. A blocked cat can DIE within a few days. either from his bladder bursting or because, with him unable to eliminate all the toxins, they build up and cause kidney failure. marvistavet.com/ html/ body_urinary_blockage.html Notice it says that a partial blockage can be just as serious as a complete blockage. When my cat had this, he did not have to stay overnight at the vet. It wasn't super expensive. . One thing that can cause a block is crystals. IF he has struvite crystals, they MIGHT be dissolved by temporarily making his urine more acidic. for example giving apple cider vinegar mixed into canned cat food. earthclinic.com/ Pets/ cystitis.html You would really be taking a gamble. Some people said it helped but another said it didn't and their cat died. And it is not just the few that say "Nay " that are disagreeing. And some "Yea "s are not agreeing with the remedy but with people who said take the cat to the vet! For example see Dila from NY's posts and the reply to her. A true urinary tract infection is less common, but a possibility and would need an antibiotic. Your other problem now is NOT EATING = = > risk of liver damage.( hepatic lipidosis) He has to get food and water into him. But it's a "Catch 22 " . If he is blocked, putting more in is risky. But NOT giving him water will make him feel horrible and sick and even less able to eat. And not giving food will cause liver damage. *** IF this were my cat and I were on an island, no ability to catheterize him, I would try feeding maybe about 3-4 ounces of canned food a day with a couple teaspoons of acv and a few tablespoons of warm water to help make the food easier to get through the syringe . (That is NOT enough food to live on a regular basis, I would be just praying that the acv helped him to pee within a couple days.) If he does start being able to pee in proper amounts then he needs lots of water to flush out the bladder. feed only canned food, mix some water in it, put several water bowls around etc. To feed , use pate-style canned cat food mixed w/ a little warm water ( and in this case a spoon of acv) , put into a big feeding syringe without a needle then slowly syringe into the side of his mouth. making sure he swallows. They might have those syringes at drug stores or pet supply stores. Vets definitely have them and maybe they would sell you one or a few. I prefer one that is at least 10 ml so I could give that much food without having to refill it. A good choice food is Wellness chicken or turkey. Or for food found in supermarkets there is the "classic " kinds of Fancy Feast like Tender Liver & Chicken. or the "Paté Style " Friskies You can also mix in stage 1 meat baby food ( no onions or garlic.) But it would be so much better if you could get him to a vet. Do you have any money of your own, or anything you could sell and find a way to get him there? Or can you ask other relatives to lend you money or if they were going to give you money for a birthday or something., ask if they could help your cat instead. |

Take a shovel and chop off his head. He could be really sick and since he can't get any medical help, what's the point of keeping him around? |

Tell your parents that if he doesn't go to the vet. he will die and you will report them for animal abuse and they'll go to prison. Or earn some money to get him to the vet. asap. Or take him to the ASPCA. for treatment (but he will adopted out to someone else after he is better) |

Cats can get sick from lots of things, first check to see if he has flees, or look to see if he has a puncture wound anywhere, a puncture wound can come from another cat if he was in a fight. These wounds can get infected and he will need anti bi otics. Or maybe worm him, if he has worms thats an easy fix with a worming tablet. |

Enclose your cat off to one room put a vaporizer or humidifier you should see a vetranarian because it's most likely upper respeitory infection and it turns into a virus and dosent go away without antibiotics. Not even vaccinations can help but they can reduce the chances of it getting too severe but you need to get ahold of it before it's too serious which it will happen very fast. If you enclose them to a room you can also monitor how much they are eating and drinking. I had a sick cat a few months ago I got antibiotics from the vet, went to the store and bought vitamins and minerals that helped him keep his strength I thought he was going to die I had a vaporizer and had to feed him mashed food and KMR ( kitten milk replacer ) through a medicine dropper and gave him nose drops he was in this state for about two weeks but with much time and I forgot to put in sugar water he pulled through he could barely breath and when he finally started moving again he was bone skinny! But don't put of a vet visit because he could even have feline lukeimia or feline aids which you will the. Have to put your cat to sleep, but it's most likely just feline upper respiratory so you can get some antibiotics and possible nose and eye drops from your vet. I am a humane society foster parent and have saved, recovered, and rehomed tons of sick cats! Hope this helped the best of luck to you and you kitty!:) please tell your parents he will most likely die without vet care I'm sorry I put alot in about vet care but if they still won't take him buy cat vitamins and kitten milk replacer and wet food mash and mix them together and feed him through medecine dropper which if you ask a pharmacy usually they will give you one for free. Do this about twice or three times a day but I hope your cat gets better and I hope this helps:( |

He might have a hairball he can't get rid of. This can make a cat very sick. Ways you can try to help him eliminate it is to let him chew on some grass and see if he throws it all up or get a hairball ointment and dab it on his paws and face. Good luck. |

Ok here is what you need to do: Since a cat can go up to 7 days without food or water you don't need to worry about him eating. Let the cat rest as much as he wants to. Don't worry if he is not eating. Animals know how to heal themselves. Don't pick him up since he probably hurts from any broken rib or other sort of pain. Cats are very strong and they can survive anything but they need to rest. He will lose some weight in order to recover but that is completely normal. Don't panic, your cat will be fine. You don't need to take your cat to the vet if you don't have the sources. It's understandable. Just keep clean water all the time and fresh food for your cat. Replace water every 6-8 hours and also his food! Hope he heals soon!! |
