How long does the ground injected by termite control chemicals remain poisonous to pets? (cats?)?

Question: How long does the ground injected by termite control chemicals remain poisonous to pets? (cats?)?

(Posted by: on 2012-02-03 19:15:04)

I had the termite control people inject the pesticide in ground around the house last December 9, 2011.The next day my beloved dog died just by merely inhaling the fumes, despite being place in the open air garage. Because of this, I am much careful now. My cats are kept in a green house, a tree beside that green house ( a mere 2inches from the end of the greenhouse) is a tree whose roots were injected by the pesticide too. I had to relocate them and place them in small cages so that they will be away from the area. It is now, Feb 3, almost 2 months after the injecting of termiticide, is it now safe for them to return. How long does the ground stay poisonous?

I would say that as long as the pesticide is supposed to be there to kill termites, it has the capacity to kill any other organism. I would suggest keeping your cat inside the house.

It largely depends on the exact chemical that was used. Do you know the chemical name ?? Generally, termiticides will remain active in the soil for several years, often 5 or more. Notice, "in the soil ". It does not pose any danger to your pets. Your dog was not killed by "inhaling the fumes " of the chemical, not possible, and I don't believe it has any relation to the termiticide at all. Your dog would have to drink large quantities of the stuff, and that's unlikely, and that would be your fault for letting the damn thing out during application. Your cats are safe outside NOW. If the trees you're talking about are fruit or nut trees, don't eat the fruit. Me - 20 years as a pest controller and trainer. edit - my answer above is true if you live in the US. Some countries allow use of chemicals that have been long banned in the US because they were to dangerous. Again, what chemical was used ?

You need to contact the company that applied the termiticide and ask. There are different chemicals used, and they will know which one was used and how poisonous it is to the cat. Me… kittyslave23… I know my place.

The ground should stay poisonous to termites for at least 5 years. The ground should not be toxic to dogs or cats. There's no way your dog should have been able to absorb a toxic dose, even if digging in the treated soil. Did you do an autopsy or keep samples? You should inquire with your local pesticide regulator (it varies), probably a 'pest control board'. I would want at least a residue test to determine what was applied. It may be that your yard is unsafe and the company is liable. It may be that your dog's death was unrelated. Either way it would be good to know.
