Why do people suggest not feeding cats seafood flavored foods?

Question: Why do people suggest not feeding cats seafood flavored foods?

(Posted by: ravenpoe787 on 2012-02-09 15:39:07)

My cats are on a mostly dry food diet. I give them blue buffalo chicken flavored food. I buy wet too and feed it to them once or more a week. I keep hearing to stay away from seafood flavors but not sure why. I try a variety of flavors and brands of the wet to see what he likes and he seems to really prefer Surf n Turf by Merrick. Is it ok to buy him more of the fishy flavors if thats what he prefers as long as his daily diet is a chicken based food? I don't give them milk ever and I do give a PINCH of canned tuna if I am making a salad for myself but thats only once a month or so if even that. I mainly feed them the dry food and they do have plenty of water with their fountain they drink from daily. One cat just never did like wet food but I put it out sometimes and the boy is the only one to eat it

Fish is NOT a good food to be feeding. It has too much mercury (especially tuna). Cats can become addicted to fish and refuse other healthier foods. The less fish you feed the better off your cat will be. And too much fish can cause some males to have more UTI problems.

It makes their breath stink.

Not sure who's telling you not to do that but I've never been told that & I've always fed the cats that I had stuff like that. Next time someone tells you not to then ask them why because you've always done that. Or better yet you could just ask the vet if they've ever heard that. I've also gave them Starkist & they just tear that up! But yeah I wouldn't really worry about it unless a vet or someone like that actually verifies that for you.

Well tuna in particular has higher levels of mercury, look at this website: gorbzilla.com/ all_about_tuna.htm also, here's a list of things that I found that is best if cats don't eat (salmon is one of them and it says why) cats.about.com/ od/ catsafety/ qt/ cattoxins.htm hope this helps! :)

Not only is it ok to give him fishy flavors...it is much better than giving him dry food. doesnt matter if dry food is high in protein. cats need fluids in their system and dry food depletes that. thats why so many kittys get fat, diabeties, and stones in their bladder, etc. etc. etc. dont listen to the peeps about seafood flavors....you dont want to give him tuna fish made fore human consumption but seafood flavor cat food is fine. the people that are telling you not to give your cat seafood flavors are probably woofing down a bag of cheetos and smoking a ciggarette as we speak. they cant control their own selves so they try to control kittys. im sure if seafood flavors were bad in anyway.....it would be for one kitty in 2, 3, or 5 million kittys kinda like caffeine is bad for us yet we still all drink it anyhows. how about a coke or pepsi?...we all know thats not good. dont get crazy with all the rules of life with kitty....unless your living a drab life yourself. electric water fountain very good for kitty....electric though...woving water kittys love!

It makes their "poop "smell badly which is a problem for most humans plus less nutrient than other varieties. If you can stand the smell:feed it to them
