Question: Fostering cats and kittens?
(Posted by: Kel Kel on 2011-12-25 14:45:48)
I want to apply to my local humane society to be a foster parent for cats and kittens (well, my mom would apply because I'm nOt old enough, but I would do all the work). We have an adequate home, with one dog who's very friendly with all other pets. Though I gO to school all day, I would have plenty of time to socialize with the cats in the evening. I think I would have time for kittens as well. What do you think? Should I do it? |

Well, me personally, I wouldn't suggest it. I have a 12 week old kitten and she is lots more work then I ever could have expected. She has pooped and peed all over the place, she tears up my schoolwork. She damaged my computer and it cost several hundred to repair it. She is scratching up my very expensive wood floors, and she is noisy! I love her very much, but could never have expected all the problems she has caused. If you really want to do it, expect all of the above, and make sure you're prepared to do a lot of work and clean up. I'd also suggest that you don't foster any more than 2 kittens at a time. Any more than that would probably be too much work for you. Especially since you are at school all day. Anyhow, that's my two cents. Just make sure that you've got everything ready when you bring the kittens home (food, water, litter boxes, and toys) and that you don't get too attached to them when it's time for them to go to a new home. Good luck and I hope you consider everything I said, and make an informed decision. And kudos to you for wanting to foster kittens. Even though it's lots of work, kittens are wonderful little creatures, and it's nice to see someone that wants to help them get socialized and ready for new homes. Have a great evening! <3 Cheers xo |

Only you can decide :) It's a lot of work, and sometimes can be heartbreaking, but there's something very satisfying about knowing that you're helping to save lives. They can be very messy, and they need a decent amount of your time to be well socialized. The kittens can be rather messy and destructive. You may want to start with an adult to get your feet wet. If that goes well, then go for the kitten. Also some shelters require you to keep the foster pets separate from your own. If that's the case, do you have a spare room you can use? It helps to have a room with easy to clean flooring. Sometimes they throw up, sometimes the young kittens are still getting to know the litter box situation. Good luck! |
