Can my kitten give my other cat worms?

Question: Can my kitten give my other cat worms?

(Posted by: Just a Girl on 2011-08-10 10:45:45)

Okay I have a new kitten, 6 weeks old and I was pretty much waiting for the 8 week mark before I have him deflead and dewormed. I don't really see anything in his stool but his stomach seems a tad bit round (but that could just be because he eats a lot) I know that the majority of kittens have worms from the get- go be it from mother's milk or fleas. My kitten and cat sometimes use the same litterbox so I was wondering if it was possible for my cat to possibly catch the worms if my kitten has any. I also want to add that my cat has the funniest way of going to the bathroom, he teeters on the edge of the litter box and never lets his paws or but touch the litter. I keep them sleeping in separate rooms so they don't share a sleeping space. Anyway I appreciate the input!

Yes, your adult cat can get worms from your kitten using the same litterbox. And I would bet that your adult cat touches the litter at some point, because cats dig and scratch where they are going to urinate or deficate. You should NOT wait for your kitten to be 8 weeks old before deworming. In fact, deworming should start around 3 weeks of age because these parasites aren't just sitting there, they are doing damage to your kitten's body.

Yes, any cat in contact with the kitten can catch worms. I would serioiusly consider getting two seperate litter boxes as well as sleeping arrangements, to be on the safe side.

Yep, your kitten can give your older cat worms. It's not just through the litter tray however, fleas are connected with worms too and can transfer the eggs. Basically the best thing to do is worm both your cats at the same time so both of them are 'wormless' at the same time, preventing them from transfering to eachother.
