How to make durable all weather outdoor feral cat shelters?
I live in Utah where the summers can get up 99 and down to single digits in the winter, so I want that will be good in any weather. I realize that what kind of bedding is appropriate depends on the weather. I would appreciate any info you have on building and maintaining a shelter.I'd also like know what bedding worked best and where some good locations would be to place the shelters. Also any websites that have anything to with cat shelters I've never don e this before but I want to help the cats that are outside in this storm we're having, so maybe they can have some dry and cozy to go to during the next one.p.s. how do you get the cats used to the shelter

Hello, I live in San Mateo, CA and take care of 3 indoor cats. One of them is a beautiful adopted stray. My question is regarding the five other stray cats I am feeding outside on my front porch. They are all beautiful but I cannot possibly bring them all inside. My worry is that winter is approaching. I would like to build portable shelters for these five cats so that I can continue to feed them daily but I don't have to worry about them shivering in the cold wet weather. For me, they have to be portable in case the neighbors complain, easy to clean, and something that other animals aren't likely to take advantage of. I'm imagining a sort of cube set up off the ground with a shelf that the cats can jump on to and with a small entrance so the cats can enter but raccoons cannot. The entire front wall would unhinge downwards so that I can easily hose out the inside if needed and I would prefer if one wall is made of see through plastic so that I can see if the shelter is occupied. The entire shelter should be be large enough to keep the cat comfortable and warm and small enough for me to carry to other locations. But I don't know what cats prefer. For what looks to be 10 pound cats, are shelters of 2 ft. long x 2 feet wide x1.5 foot high sufficient space? Too much? Would they take better to wooden shelters or all plastic? If one wall is see through, would they feel unsafe in this shelter? Please send me suggestion on how to best shelter these five friends. Thank you community
If I volunteer at a cat shelter, can I bring home diseases to my cat at home?
If I'm handling the cats, could I bring home a disease and transfer it to my pet cat? I, obviously, want to keep my cat at home safe, and I want to prevent bringing home any diseases.
Is my cat's bum inflamed because of sitting in poo at the cat shelter? And what can I do to help her?
When I collected my cat from the shelter after having been on holiday, the owner told me that she'd had a messy bum that day. The owner said she'd tried to clean it but my cat wouldn't let her do much. When I went into the pen my cat didn't come to greet me like normal but hid instead. When I tried to pick her up to put her in her carry basket she clung onto the fencing and then my clothes. The pen stank of poo and her litter tray had at least 3 or 4 poos in it she normally does about 1 a day . After I got her home she seemed quite happy, very affectionate and not uncomfortable or anything but her bum was bright pink and looked quite swollen.She's never had this problem before and to me it doesn't look as if her bum had just been a problem " that day" . Her litter tray at the shelter is smaller than her usual one and unless she did four poos that day, I'm not sure it had been cleaned out as regularly as I would have liked. It's possible that she had done more poo because of the different shelter food or something, but she did a small normal looking poo when she got home before she ate anything and seems to have her normal bowel habits. My thinking is that she may have got an inflamed bum from sitting on some older poo when using her litter tray at the shelter, because she's a semi longhair so it's possible it got all tangled up and irritated her bum. So is it because of sitting in poo at the shelter? Or could it be something else? Should I take her to the vet or just clean her bum and wait to see whether the irritation will go down now she's back at home?The shelter is actually a really nice one, they are good to the cats and my cat always comes home happy and healthy. I have never had a problem with it before, but her litter tray isn't normally as messy as that when I collect her. If it is because of sitting in poo at the shelter, is there anything I could ask them to do differently next time she goes...bearing in mind I don't know for sure that they haven't cleaned her out as regularly as I would have liked? I'll trim her hair & try Aloe Vera, thanks She seems bouncy, lively & hasn't cried when pooing, but if it hasn't calmed down soon I'll take her to the vet. Re worms she was in a pen by herself & I give her worming tablets could she still have them? They use clay litter but much less than I do. She's given the same dry food as at home, but sometimes also wet food, probably more often than I do. Her poo looks normal but I'll keep a lookout for any changes.Thanks for your opinions re changing shelters. She did seem stressed, never happened before, she's always been stretched out relaxing when I collect her. I thought that it might be because she'd just had a bum clean and didn't like it, rather than feeling stressed in the shelter full stop. I will change shelters if necessary but I don't want to change her routine she knows & likes the workers unless this was definitely caused by them.Any other advice gratefully received

The ALP won't come and pick up strays . I don't drive, and cat foods for 6 stray is getting expensive.I keep calling and feeding, and every season more kittens that are attacked by more large stray dogs...where's the help the humane society is suppose to provide? I've kept them as healthy as I can , without having them inside my home. Where is the help, they take in dogs all the time, are cats less important? Don't give me that crap...cats kill the wild birds, I watched a german shepard take down a blue jay and then a cardinal last week.

Okay so how do i make him a good shelter that will withstand the same heavy snow condtitions we had last winter? cos it was terrible. He is a young stray cat, and he has been spade we made sure and he comes to our door every afternoon and lunch to eat. iv named him Tony after the tiger because he likes frosties... Really i want to know what to make the shelter out of, how to insulate it and how do i get him to go in it? Im asking now because already its september and feels like november.
