Why does everyone freak out so much about cat declawing?
I'm taking my kittens in soon to have them spayed and declawed. What's the big deal?I understand that some clinics don't use up to date techniques. However, my vet clinic does laser declawing and uses nerve blocks and I know that they are the best in the area. Everyone says, " Use SoftPaws " Tried that already. I have hot pink nail caps on the floor all over my house because they don't stay on nearly as well as advertised. Plus, they're expensive at 20 bucks a pack. That's fifty cents for each little piece of plastic you get that falls off a week later. Everyone also says, " It's like cutting off the third joint of your own finger " Have you seen a diagram of a cat's foot bones? Their distal phalanges are a lot smaller than ours and the cat doesn't even put weight on them. They are very specialized bones only used to support the claw. Assuming you take your cat to a good clinic, what the heck is the problem? It seems like people don't even do their research before they complain.My kittens were ferals, born in a neighbor's yard. I brought them in out of the goodness of my heart and to help combat the problem of strays in my neighborhood. I know, I'm suuuch a horrible person. Of course these are indoor cats. They never go out except on a leash and harness. They have no need of self defense. Furthermore, feral cats usually respond to danger by RUNNING AWAY. And yes, I'm sure the surgery doesn't work as well on older cats and that's why I'm considering it with spaying while they are young.I have yet to see any concrete evidence that declawing changes the behavior of cats. Can someone show me some proof? All the declawed cats I've met continue to knead and " scratch" away to their heart's content as though they aren't even aware of the amputations. Whether or not declawing is legal in Europe is entirely irrelevant. They don't allow declawing? We don't allow drugs and prostitution. Different cultures have different values.I used to think declawing was inhumane too, until I did my research and saw what this distal phalange actually looked like, and discovered that it was not a weight bearing bone. You hear so much from PETA activists these days about how horrible declawing is, when come to find out that the best and most ethical veterinary clinic in my area does laser declawings every day.

Why have some pro cat declawing people ?
Started calling us people against declawing, PETA freaks, and other equally insulting names ? PETA has nothing to do with it, I'm certainly not a member of that,man.And why do they still insist that it's OK to mutilate cats when it's banned in so many countries as animal abuse ? Surely that says it all man Some come on and say their cats are fine with being declawed, they won't admit what they've done is terrible and they give 'advice' to other people without even thinking of the pain and confusion of the toeless clawless cats. I don't get it man why people get cats if they don't like the claws on them? Mind you man,I'm heartened to find more sensible people coming on who know how cruel it is and more vets who won't do it.One last thing, people who don't even know if the asker lives in a country where its banned,are too quick to say 'get it declawed' I think. Do you ? This is for a research paper and was wondering if anyone knew any sites that talk about why declawing is okay?Please don't tell me that declawing is wrong and cruel, I don't have a cat I just need sites to learn about their side of the argument.

Advice on cat declawing?
My cat is 2 or 3 years old and has been scratching up the furniture for a while now. She has plenty of scratching posts and cardboard box catnip thingys yet she still goes after the furniture. My mom says we either have to declaw her or get rid of her. What is your opinion on declawing an older cat? what is the difference between a 3 year old and a kitten?alright I would just like to put out there that I am not against declawing, my two older cats are declawed and are just fine. But we did this when they were kittens. If I were not away at school I would trim nails and try to train her but I am not so its up to my family. Dont want your opinion on declawing in general just on an older cat...and she scratches the shit out of anyone who tries to get near her with soft paws and then chews them off if we manage to get them on...

How to handle cat declawing at work when I am against it.?
I work at a veterinary hospital I have only been there for a couple months. I had worked at a different Animal hospital that did not declaw. But I had to quit there and work at this new Animal Hospital cause I needed more hours. Anyway this new Animal Hospital does declaw cats, and my co workers promote it, they tell customers to get their cats declawed so they don't mess up any furniture. This is SO wrong to me in SO many ways Cat declawing does not benefit a cat in ANY WAY, it hurts them. Makes them completely vulnerable to EVERYTHING. There are so many bad things that go along with cat declawing. Physical pain, behavioral issues after the declaw, endless negative facts. There is NO HEALTH benefit what so ever to the cat it is a SELFISH human act, done solely for the convenience of it's owner. Anyone who says they have to have the declaw or put the cat down is just using moral blackmail, and should not even be a pet owner. So how can I just sit by and see this brutal mutilation going on? I can't quit, I can't tell these people what to do or not do, especially since I'm the new employee. Any suggestions??

Cat Declawing in Sacramento?
I have two cats both 2yr old. I need to get them declawed, just the front. I would like to find a good place in the Sacramento area to take them. So far the Cat Clinic of Folsom is offering $285 per cat where all the others I've called are twice that. If you know of a clean place that beats this price I would appreciate it.Yes, they are indoor only.I've offered them scratching posts and they don't care.I've used nail caps and they chew them off.I've used spray bottles and they like itI've used couch tape and they eat itI've used all the sprays that are supposed to keep them from scratching and they don't work.I trim their nails weekly and they still do damage to the furniture.I know what declawing is and I know it's inhumane but I don't want to buy my in laws another $5000 couch because my cats destroyed it.Declawing is my last option and don't lecture me about it, I just want vet clinics.Oh wow, you are all so angry with me for wanting to mutilate my cats. Well, you win. I won't do it. But I really really really need alternatives that WORK. I have done EVERYTHING else. Really, I've shown them and I've done EVERYTHING the books tell me to. Cat Declawing?
I don't know very much about declawing. Does it hurt them at all? Do they even notice that it's been done? Will they still be able to scratch themselves when they are itchy? I just want them to stop scratching the furniture, but I don't really want to do that to them...Thank you to everyone who has replied. I think it is safe to say that declawing my cats is out of the question I would never put them through anything like that just for the sake of a couch I just didn't know very much about it and wanted to know more. Cat declawing question....?
I have recently adopted a cat from the local animal shelter. I moved into an apartment complex about a month ago, and once I have read the fine print of the lease terms for pets the say that all cats must be de clawed. The cat is about 2 years old....I know that de clawing is a controversial procedure, and I would not choose to get it done if it was not required in my lease. My current problem is whether or not to get it done surgically with or without laser. If you are familiar, the laser procedure is between $400 and $500, and regular procedure is around $250. I can be pushing it with my finances and spend more for the laser surgery, but would rather not spend up to $500 if it is not necessary. I know the laser surgery has better recovery time, less pain, ect, and I am conflicted on wether or not to pay more for my new kitty to be happy....any thoughts?
